In Canada, every season is a celebration, a new opportunity to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. The colours of our landscape change as the pages of the calendar turn. As spring warms the earth, millions of tulips come to life in an exposion of colour all acros the city.
And summer brings us hot, hazy days of sunbathing at the beach, sailing, boating and fishing at one of the hundreds of freshwater lakes and rivers . As autumn approaches, the farming communities begin to reap their harvests and celebrate with fall fairs and festivals. Autumn is a kaleidoscope of colour in Canada, especially in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.
Who said winter is dull? Winter is a wonderful season in Canada, and our wintertime is filled with activities. Our typical winter starts on December 21st and last through March 21st with an average temperature of 22minus degrees . In winter,we have a lot of festivals such as Christmas, New Year Festival and Winterlude.
Winterlude festival which typically takes place over three weekends in February, is one of Canada’s largest winter carnivals and draws over 600,000 visistors each year. In winter the Rideau Canal in Ottawa is transformed into the world’s longest skating rink, with eight kilometres of cleared and maintained ice.Everybody attends the Winterlude. It’ s not unsual to see entire families enjoying the fun on skates. You’ll find works of art in ice scultures at Dow’s lake and Confederation Park. Brightly lit ice scultures adorn the city during Winterlude.
The canal in Spring looks a lot different! Instead of ice skaters, there are boats going up and down the canal and waiting at the locks to be lifted up to the next water level. Cycling and rollerblading along the canal path is a popular evening activity.
Here is a view looking towards Dows Lake from the Hartwell locks. Along the canal and the Rideau River there are many parks which provide lots of green space for walking, riding, or having a picnic. Many of these parks are locations for the Tulip Festival with thousands of tulips in bloom.
