The Tulip Festival June 4, 2008

In winter, Canada is very cold. After winter comes spring. But it comes late. It begins at March 21st. Now the weather is warmer , snow melts , grass becomes green, and trees in the parks and in the forests begin to come out in bud .

From early spring, Ottawa is ablaze with the warmth and beauty of daffodils , crocuses and over a million exotic tulips. The May Tulip Festival highlights the spring season and brings thousands of visistors to the Capital City.

Each year Queen Juliana sends to the people of Canada a gift of some 15,000 tulip bulbs. This adds to her original gift of several thousand bulbs which she gave in gratitude after ending her exile in Canada during the Second World War. The National Capital Commission supplements this gift and maintains many miles at scenic driverways.
